RULE Students Win
International Client Counseling Competition
(1). On January 29, 2010, two RULE
students, Tan Tepi Kanika and Theng Tith Maria won first
place in the USAID EWMI sponsored International Client
Counseling Competition. The competition, conducted in
English, requires law students to give spontaneous legal
advice to clients played by actors. This year’s topic was
white collar crime. This marks the third straight year that
RULE students have won the competition and gone on to
represent Cambodia at the international rounds. This is a
second win for the two students who last year advanced to
the semi-final rounds in Las Vegas, beating competitors from
many English speaking countries. RULE students Phy Chanpisey
and Sin Sophea won second place. This is the first time in the
three year competition that one school has won both first
and second place.
(2). In
this year, RULE will also send students to participate in
the three other international Competitions, all of which
require extensive reading and writing of memorials to
qualify for entry. The first competition, the International
Commercial Arbitration Moot, will take place in Hong Kong
from March 15 to March 27, 2010. The second competition, the
51 year old Jessup International Moot Court Competition will
take place in Washington DC from March 21 to March 28, 2010.
This marks the second time, RULE has sent a team. RULE has
stepped forward as the only Cambodian team in history to
participate in Jessup considered by many to be the most
prestigious competition. RULE will send a third team to the
International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna,
Austria.
(3). RULE’s
decision to field the teams is to provide the nation with
attorneys who can effectively represent the nation at the
International Court of Justice (ICJ) and in the commercial
arbitration proceedings, which are fast becoming the venue
of choice for companies, including those doing business in
Cambodia, to resolve their disputes.
